Good things we do
The Sorghum Sisters provide employment training to disadvantaged women. Many of the residents at the Carlton Estate are from a refugee background, have never worked in Australia and have little or no English language skills. The opportunity to participate in the Sorghum Sisters’ 13 to 16 week training course in hospitality provides a pathway to secure long term employment in the hospitality services industry.
The Sorghum Sisters is also constantly involved in a range of local community projects and events. We are also participants of the Healthy Lunches initiative, where we provide nutritious lunches to school children and staff. This allows the Sorghum Sisters to educate the school community on the availability of affordable and healthy food alternatives.
Our enterprise has also catered for communities to aid in celebrating Harmony Day, Refugee Day and Cultural Diversity Week. They have been invited to speak in various workshops and conferences, joined the local community in tree planting and other earth friendly initiatives, and hosted visitors on tours.
The Sorghum Sisters was born in the kitchen of Carlton Primary School in 2005. It evolved from the need expressed by the African community in Carlton Housing Estate to find creative ways of surmounting their barriers to employment and social engagement. A series of consultations highlighted the strong passion and skills for cooking by the African women, seeding the idea of establishing a local catering social enterprise specialising in African cuisine.
