The mystical moon rabbit, known for radiating kindness and generosity, is a fitting title for this social enterprise cafe

Moon Rabbit is a social enterprise serving excellent coffee, jaffles, cakes and other delicious treats in Melbourne’s north. Established in 2018, they provide employment and training for learners with additional needs. The cafe is part of Bridge Darebin, a not-for-profit delivering community programs such as vocational training, childcare and weekly lunches under the ‘Laneway Lunch’ initiative for anyone who needs a meal. Trainees at Moon Rabbit get hands-on experience as well as classroom-based training and ongoing support from the dedicated team at Bridge Darebin.

Coffee and training

Chris Lombardo is Bridge Darebin’s Executive Officer and mother to a child with learning difficulties. Moon Rabbit was her inspiration, born from her experience of trying to help her son get a job and the empathy she has for others in his shoes.

The cafe also takes a dynamic and all-encompassing approach to sustainability, for example: No plastic straws; no take-away coffee cups, instead it’s BYO or customers can borrow a ‘real’ one; takeaway food is served in paper bags, cardboard boxes or glass jars; organic waste is composted; suppliers provide their deliveries in reusable containers.

Moon Rabbit can get pretty busy on weekends and don’t forget to BYO cup if you’re after a takeaway coffee!
